Inspired By Candied Yams and Daigaku Imo

This balsamic roasted sweet potato dish was inspired by two incredible culinary experiences I had on a cruise ship in Japan. Within the same week, I tasted both American candied yams and Japanese Daigaku Imo-two dishes that celebrate the perfect blend of sweet and savoury.

I instantly fell in love with how these dishes transformed simple root vegetables into something magical, and I knew I had to bring a little bit of that joy into my own kitchen.

Now, these balsamic roasted sweet potatoes have become an irreplaceable autumnal side dish in my home, blurring the lines between sweet and savoury in the most delicious way. If you're a fan of honey-roasted carrots and parsnips, you're going to adore this recipe-it's a must-try for your next cosy dinner!

    Ingredient Notes

    • sweet potatoes: orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, skin-on, well scrubbed.
    • extra virgin olive oil: or neutral oil, like vegetable or sunflower oil.
    • balsamic vinegar: if you're using very thick, syrupy and sweet balsamic vinegar that tastes almost like balsamic glaze, you may need to reduce the amount of (or omit) honey in this recipe.
    • honey: may be replaced with maple syrup or even brown sugar.
    • sea salt and black pepper.
Ingredients for Roasted Balsamic Sweet Potatoes.

Find the ingredient quantities, detailed instructions and nutritional information in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

    Step-By-Step Method

    1. Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F). Line a large baking tray with a large piece of parchment paper or foil.

    2. In a large bowl, mix the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey, salt and pepper. If you are using sugar instead of honey, mix the ingredients for a while until the sugar dissolves.

Balsamic Drizzle for the sweet potatoes in small white bowl with a spoon in it.

    3. Add the sweet potato pieces and toss well to coat.

    4. Spread the potatoes onto a prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Spoon any remaining dressing from the bowl all over them.

Balsamic Sweet potatoes spread on a baking tray in a spingle layer ready to roast.

    5. Roast the potatoes for 30-40 minutes, mixing them midway through. They should be fork-tender and turn golden brown with caramelised edges. Season potatoes with extra salt, if needed.

    Storage

The best way to store your balsamic roasted sweet potatoes is to let them cool completely, then place them in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days. To reheat, simply spread them on a baking tray and warm them in the oven at 180°C (350°F) until heated through.

Hi, I am Ieva – the cook and baker in our North Wales home. I share my life with my husband Seb, who doubles as my number-one taste tester, our golden retriever Sawyer, who’s always on crumb patrol and multiple sourdough starters. My days revolve around food—whether I’m experimenting with new recipes, tending to my veggie garden, or sneaking bites of “taste tests” (quality control, of course). Cooking isn’t just a passion; it’s my way of keeping Seb from reaching ‘hangry’ levels! Somebody HAS to feed Seb…
