    What Are Poke Bowls?

A poke bowl is a traditional Hawaiian dish built around marinated fish served over rice and topped with fresh ingredients. The word poke (pronounced poh-kay) comes from the Hawaiian language and means "to slice" or "cut into pieces". It refers to cubes of raw tuna, fresh salmon or other fish traditionally used in the dish.

A traditional poke bowl often features sushi-grade fish, served over white sushi rice or sticky rice. Historically, fishermen would season freshly caught fish with simple ingredients like sea salt, sweet onions and seaweed.

In recent times, poke bowls have exploded in popularity around the world. What began as a simple dish of marinated fish and warm rice has evolved into the colourful modern poke bowl we know today. You'll now find poke restaurants (and huge supermarket grab-and-go sections) offering everything from tofu poke bowl creations to low-carb poke bowl versions made with cauliflower rice.

Part of the appeal is that the possibilities are nearly endless. With fresh vegetables, healthy fats like creamy avocado, crunchy toppings such as macadamia nuts or fried onion, and sauces like spicy mayo, sriracha sauce or soy sauce dressings, you can create exciting combinations depending on your mood, ingredients on hand, or what's lurking in your local grocery store.

Poke bowls are also a great way to prepare balanced meals for busy weeknights or meal prep. Cook a batch of jasmine brown rice, basmati rice or white sushi rice in a rice cooker. Prepare your toppings and assemble bowls whenever hunger strikes.

Below you'll find some of our favourite poke bowl recipes, each packed with flavour and plenty of room to customise.

For seafood lovers, this bowl is a showstopper. Yellowfin tuna (a.k.a. fresh ahi tuna) steaks are coated in sesame seeds and lightly seared, giving you that irresistible contrast between a warm crust and tender centre. Paired with rice vinegar, creamy avocado and crunchy vegetables, it's one of the best poke bowls in our repertoire.

Combined with edamame beans, mango, crunchy vegetables and sesame seeds on top, this bowl delivers a bright and satisfying twist on classic poke bowls. Plus, we make a delicious lime juice, sesame oil and chilli flake dressing to go with this boke bowl recipe too.
