Mixed Spice is a staple blend for many bakers, especially when it comes to late autumn and winter baking! Whilst mixed spice is available in almost every shop due to its popularity, if you ever find that you've run out and are unable to continue baking, fret not! It is very easy to make a good Mixed Spice Blend at home using various spices in your cupboard! It may taste slightly different to your usual shop-bought brand, but it will taste good. And you can always adjust the balance of spices to suit your own individual taste!

Mixed spice is a blend commonly used in Britain and Ireland, especially around Christmas time. Typically made with cinnamon, mace, nutmeg and allspice, it is extremely aromatic and adds an earthy but sweet taste to your bakes.

There are no specific rules for the ratios of spices in Mixed Spice. Typically the shop-bought Mixed Spice has a prominent cinnamon taste dominating all the other spices. However, feel free to customize the rations to make a blend that works for you and your specific recipes.

We found it difficult to find mace in the UK supermarkets here in North Wales, so our blend doesn't contain any. Instead, we use more nutmeg, all-spice and cinnamon to create a similar warming spice blend.

All you need to do is mix all the spices together in a small bowl and voila! Because the source of the aroma and flavour lies in the oils of the spices and oil tends to evaporate over time, it is important that you keep your Spices in airtight containers.

What are your favourite recipes using mixed spice? We love adding some to our Apple Crumble, Sourdough Hot Cross Buns, Gingerbread and various other bakes. You can find some of our favourite recipes that use mixed spice below:

Author of the blog holding a fork with spaghetti on it.

Hi, I am Ieva – the cook and baker in our North Wales home. I share my life with my husband Seb, who doubles as my number-one taste tester, our golden retriever Sawyer, who’s always on crumb patrol and multiple sourdough starters. My days revolve around food—whether I’m experimenting with new recipes, tending to my veggie garden, or sneaking bites of “taste tests” (quality control, of course). Cooking isn’t just a passion; it’s my way of keeping Seb from reaching ‘hangry’ levels! Somebody HAS to feed Seb…
