The Easiest and Tastiest Ways To Cook Cabbage

This Savoy Cabbage stir fry is an extremely easy recipe that even beginner cooks can make. High-heat cooking technique ensures cabbage retains some of its crunch, and a simple soy sauce adds heaps of uncomplicated flavours, making it a versatile side dish to serve with almost any main dish. There are plenty of ways to customise this dish too to make it your own.

    Ingredients and Substitutes

    • neutral oil: we used avocado oil on this occasion, but any oil with high smoke point will work well, vegetable oil and peanut oil can be used instead. If you want some extra flavour, add a drop of sesame oil too!
    • garlic cloves: fresh garlic works best here, but if you've run out, use garlic powder.
    • spring onion: also known as green onions or scallions. It may be replaced with brown onion.
    • chilli flakes: a.k.a. red pepper flakes.
    • Savoy cabbage: this recipe works well with Napa cabbage (Chinese Cabbage) or green cabbage, but you may need to adjust the cooking time slightly.
    • rice vinegar: or rice wine vinegar.
    • soy sauce: may be replaced with tamari or coconut aminos.
    • sugar: white or brown sugar - you choose.

Some great additions: This Chinese recipe can be easily customised with extra veggies, like thin strips of carrots, bell peppers and bean sprouts. You may also add thin slices of Chinese Pork Belly on top too!

How To Shred Cabbage For Stir Fry?

    1. Prepare Your Cabbage: Remove any damaged outer leaves and rinse the Savoy cabbage thoroughly under cold water.

    2. Cut into Quarters: Using a sharp knife, cut the cabbage into quarters through the core.

    3. Remove the Core: Slice out the thick core from each quarter.

    4. Finely Shred: Place a quarter flat side down on a cutting board. Use your sharp knife to slice the cabbage into thin, fine shreds. Repeat with the remaining quarters.

    5. Ready for Stir Fry: Your finely shredded cabbage is now ready to be quickly softened in your vegetable stir fry.

    Storage & Making Ahead

You can shred the cabbage up to 48 hours ahead of time, and store it in an airtight container in the fridge until you're ready to cook.

Once cooked, store stir-fried Savoy Cabbage in the fridge for up to 3 days. You may reheat it in the microwave or stir-fry over medium heat in a large skillet until warmed through. Note, that the cabbage will lose most of its crunchy texture after reheating.

Hi, I am Ieva – the cook and baker in our North Wales home. I share my life with my husband Seb, who doubles as my number-one taste tester, our golden retriever Sawyer, who’s always on crumb patrol and multiple sourdough starters. My days revolve around food—whether I’m experimenting with new recipes, tending to my veggie garden, or sneaking bites of “taste tests” (quality control, of course). Cooking isn’t just a passion; it’s my way of keeping Seb from reaching ‘hangry’ levels! Somebody HAS to feed Seb…
