These cheesy snacks also make a fantastic addition to a cheese board, offering a unique and flavorful option that complements an array of cheeses and accompaniments.

Ingredients: All About That Parmesan Cheese

Parmesan cheese takes centre stage as the only ingredient in this remarkable recipe, and that’s the best part! With its distinctive nutty and salty flavour, Parmesan cheese adds a burst of richness to every bite. Easily found at your local grocery store, this main ingredient is accessible and readily available, making it a convenient choice for creating these homemade Parmesan Crisps. Whether you opt for the classic Parmigiano Reggiano or a high-quality domestic Parmesan, the authentic taste and quality of this cheese will elevate your culinary creations to new heights.

What sets Parmesan cheese apart is its unique production process and ageing period, resulting in a distinct and robust flavour profile. The intense umami notes and granular texture of Parmesan cheese make it the perfect candidate for crafting these savoury crisps. Whether grated or shaved, the cheese melts and crisps up beautifully, creating a delicate balance of flavours and a satisfying crunch. The use of authentic Parmigiano Reggiano, with its protected designation of origin, guarantees an unrivalled taste experience, while domestic Parmesan offers a wonderful alternative that still captures the essence of this beloved cheese. Whichever variety you choose, Parmesan cheese remains the star ingredient that brings an unparalleled depth of flavour to these delectable Parmesan Crisps.

    Additional Extras

To enhance the already delicious and unique flavor of plain Parmesan crisps, there are several exciting options for adding extra flavor. Here are some suggestions:

    • Bagel seasoning: Sprinkle a generous amount of bagel seasoning over the Parmesan crisps for a savoury twist.
    • Garlic powder: Add a sprinkle of garlic powder to infuse the crisps with aromatic and garlicky notes.
    • Black pepper: A dash of freshly ground black pepper adds a subtle hint of heat and complexity to the Parmesan crisps.
    • Italian seasoning: Give your crisps an Italian flair by incorporating a blend of dried herbs like basil, oregano, and thyme.
    • Chipotle powder: For those who enjoy a smoky and spicy kick, a little bit of chipotle powder adds a delightful depth of flavour.
    • Onion powder: Enhance the overall savoriness with a touch of onion powder, lending a mild and sweet onion taste.
    • Curry powder: For an adventurous twist, sprinkle some curry powder to introduce aromatic spices and a touch of warmth.

These additional flavours can be incorporated sparingly or according to personal preference, allowing you to experiment and create a variety of Parmesan crisps with different flavor profiles to suit your taste buds. Remember, no additional salt is needed, as Parmesan cheese already provides a naturally salty element to the crisps.

    Method

Grate the parmesan finely using the fine side of the box grater

Place a large non-stick frying pan on low heat. Do not add any oil.

Place generous teaspoons of finely shredded cheese in small piles leaving enough space in between. Then spread the piles of cheese into thin layers with the back of the spoon. Keep on frying on low heat until the crisps firm up. Using a thin spatula, carefully flip them over and fry for another minute until golden brown.

If the oils from the parmesan crisps leaked out into the pan, place the crisps onto a plate lined with paper towels to adsorb any excess fat. Transfer the parmesan crisps onto a cooling rack.

    Storage & Re-Crisping

Storing Parmesan Crisps: Couldn’t eat the whole batch of these Parmesan Crisps all at once? That’s some willpower! To store your leftover crisps, simply place them in an airtight container at room temperature. No need to refrigerate! They will stay fresh and crispy for a few days, ready to be enjoyed whenever you desire.

Re-Crisping: If you find that they have lost their crispiness over time, fret not, as they can be easily re-crisped. Here’s how:

    1. Preheat your oven to 400ºF (204ºC) and prepare a large baking sheet or baking tray lined with a piece of parchment paper or a silicone mat.
    2. Place the Parmesan crisps evenly on the prepared baking surface, ensuring they have enough space between them to crisp up properly.
    3. Bake the crisps in the preheated oven for approximately 2-3 minutes, keeping a close eye on them to prevent burning. The quick heat will help reestablish their crunchiness.
    4. Once the crisps have achieved the desired crispness, remove them from the oven and transfer them to a paper towel briefly to absorb any excess oil.

    Recipe FAQs

    Can I Use Shop-Bought Pre-Grated Cheese?

Yes. You may use pre-grated cheese, or buy a block of parmesan cheese and grate it yourself.

    Should Parmesan Crisps Be Refrigerated?

No, they should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight for up to 3 days. If they get a little soggy, simply re-crisp them following the instructions in the Re-crisping Section.

    Can You Freeze Parmesan Crisps?

Although it is possible to freeze oven-baked Parmesan crisps for around 3, it’s important to note that they may lose some of their crispiness upon thawing. To regain their optimal texture, simply give them an extra minute or two in the oven to crisp up again.

Good recipe, I took it a step farther. I use a small skillet and remove the fried parm over a coffee cup to firm a bowl. After the cooling, I filled it with Ceasar salad. Makes for a salad bowl you can eat.
