Why You Will Love This Pizza Sauce From Tomato Paste
There is no easier way to make pizza sauce than making it with tomato paste, also known as tomato puree. You will absolutely love this recipe because:
- It uses only storecupboard ingredients that you likely already have in your home.
- It takes about 1 minute to make (really!).
- Homemade pizza sauce with tomato paste contains no added sugar (check the label on your tomato puree though).
- This tomato puree pizza sauce is so rich and flavoursome that it doesn’t need any extra salt.
- It’s very very low fat!
- You can make it even simpler by omitting the garlic powder and dried herbs and only using water and tomato puree for pizza sauce.
- So much cheaper to make than buying ready-made from a grocery shop!
Ingredients and Substitutes
Only four ingredients are used in this quick and easy tomato paste pizza sauce, and what is even better, two of the ingredients are completely optional (but recommended). For 1 large pizza, you will need:
- 50 g tomato paste: Don’t confuse it with tinned tomatoes or passata (the former has chunky consistency, the latter is very thin). Look for a tube of concentrated tomato puree/ tomato paste (it typically says ‘double concentrated’ on it).
- ⅛ tsp garlic powder: optional, so omit it with you don’t enjoy garlic flavour.
- 1 tsp mixed dried herbs: can be replaced with your favourite dried herbs, like oregano, dried parsley, thyme or basil.
- 3 tbsp water: tap water is perfectly fine.

What Else Can I Flavour My Pizza Sauce With?
If you want to put a fun spin on your homemade pizza sauce, feel free to jazz it up with some:
- Smoked paprika powder, chipotle paste or liquid smoke for a smoky twist.
- Your favourite chilli sauce like sriracha or tabasco for a spicy kick.
- A teaspoon of honey and vinegar for a pizza sauce that tastes more like tomato ketchup.
Method
It almost feels funny to call the way we make pizza sauce from tomato paste a method! It’s essentially a one-step recipe, that involves placing all the ingredients in a bowl and stirring until it’s all combined.

The only tip I would give you is not to add all the water at once. Different brands of tomato paste sometimes have varying consistencies, so you don’t want to add too much liquid. Keep adding water until you have a pizza sauce that you can easily distribute on your pizza dough.
