Few things feel as effortlessly festive as a tray of fig crostini landing on the table just as guests arrive. Sweet roasted figs, creamy tangy goat cheese, crisp baguette and a whisper of honey hit that sweet-savoury balance that works every single time. These fig goat cheese crostini are elegant without being fussy, perfect for Christmas, New Year's, or any holiday party where you want a "didn't try too hard, but absolutely nailed it" moment.

They're quick, flexible, and rely on a handful of good ingredients rather than complicated technique - exactly the kind of crostini appetiser I reach for during the busy holiday season.

    Ingredient Notes

This fig goat cheese crostini recipe is proof that simple ingredients, treated well, make the most memorable starters - especially when there's a glass in hand and good company around the table. Here's what you'll need:

    • Fresh figs. Look for figs that feel heavy for their size and give slightly when pressed. If fresh figs are unavailable at your local market or grocery store, a spoonful of sweet fig jam or fig preserves works beautifully as a backup.
    • Goat cheese (we used Chavroux La Bûche). This creamy goat cheese slices neatly and softens just enough on warm baguette slices. You can also use a soft goat cheese, brought to room temperature, and spread it instead.
    • Baguette. A fresh baguette is key. Slice on the diagonal into 4-inch slices for more surface area and better crunch. Sourdough baker? Try our Sourdough Baguettes!
    • Olive oil. Use a good extra virgin olive oil. A light drizzle helps everything turn golden brown without greasiness.
    • Honey. Just a teaspoon of honey goes a long way. Keep it light - these crostini are about balance, not sugar.
    • Fresh thyme. Adds an earthy note that pairs beautifully with figs and creamy cheese. Fresh basil or chopped mint also work well.
    • Optional extras. Toasted walnuts, balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze add depth and contrast, especially for cocktail party serving.

Find ingredient quantities, detailed instructions and nutritional information in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

    Step-By-Step Method

    1. Roast the figs. Preheat the oven to 200°C (fan 180°C). Arrange the fig slices cut-side up in a single layer on a small baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle with olive oil, season with a little salt and black pepper, and scatter over fresh thyme. Roast in the centre of the oven for 10-12 minutes until soft and lightly caramelised.

    2. Toast the baguette properly. Slice the fresh baguette and arrange the bread slices on a separate baking sheet. Drizzle lightly with extra virgin olive oil and bake for 5-7 minutes, flipping once, until crisp and golden at the edges. Using a separate tray matters here - steam from the figs can stop the baguette slices from crisping properly. You can toast the baguette slices in a toaster or on a griddle pan.

    3. Assemble while warm. Top each crostini with a slice (or tablespoon) of goat cheese mixture while the bread is still warm, so it softens slightly without melting completely.

    4. Finish with figs and flavour. Place a roasted fig quarter on top of each crostini. Drizzle with honey, add freshly ground black pepper, and finish with thyme leaves. Add walnuts or a few drops of balsamic vinegar if using.

    5. Serve immediately. These are best enjoyed warm, when the contrast between crisp bread, creamy cheese and jammy figs really shines.

    Variations

    • Spreadable version. Use softened goat cheese, mix with a tiny squeeze of lemon juice in a small bowl, and spread generously instead of slicing.
    • Garlic-rubbed crostini. Rub a cut garlic clove over the toasted bread for extra savoury flavour - gently does it.

    • Crunch lovers. Add toasted nuts, seeds, or even crispy salty pancetta crumbles for texture.
    • Meat lover? Add a paper thin slice of salty prosciutto under the cheese.
    • No fresh figs? Use sweet fig jam or chutney, spreading it gently over the top of the goat cheese.
    • Extra indulgence. Add a thin ribbon of balsamic glaze or a touch of lemon zest for brightness.
