Soul Warming Breakfast
It all started with us having some of our stewed apples left over. I simply mixed them into the oat porridge the next morning (a very cold morning...), and my breakfast tasted like a hug in a bowl. However, I decided to chop the apples smaller for this porridge recipe to ensure you have a little burst of apple in every bite!
Cinnamon Apple Porridge is the ultimate soul-warming breakfast, perfect for those cooler months when you need a little extra comfort. This great recipe tastes just like apple pie porridge, with its cosy blend of stewed apples and cinnamon. It's a hug in a bowl of porridge that's as satisfying as it is simple to make.

Ingredients and Substitutes
Here's everything you will need for this Porridge with Apple and Cinnamon:
- apple: we tried it with Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Golden Delicious and Bramley apples.
- maple syrup: may be replaced with honey or brown sugar. We recommend tasting fresh apples first, if they have enough natural sugar, you may not need much extra sweetness.
- cinnamon: you can experiment here. We love adding a pinch of nutmeg and cardamom powder too.
- porridge oats: a.k.a. rolled oats. Make sure to get gluten-free oats for a gluten-free breakfast. Steel-cut oats may also be used, but note that they require a considerably longer cooking time.
- milk: we tested it with dairy milk, unsweetened almond milk, oat milk and soya milk - it all works. If you have full-fat (whole) milk, but don't like your porridge too rich, replace up to half of the milk with water.

Step-By-Step Method
1. Add the apples, maple syrup, water and cinnamon to a small pan. Mix, and set it over low heat. Stirring occasionally, stew the apples for 8-10 minutes, or until softened, but not mushy.

2. In the meantime, add the oats and milk to another small saucepan and bring to a gentle boil over medium heat.
3. Reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 5-6 minutes, stirring once in a while, until the porridge is creamy, and most of the milk is absorbed (note, all oats are not made equal, so cooking time may vary).
TIP: If your oats thickened too much, add a splash of milk to bring it back to adjust the consistency of your porridge.

4. You can either stir in cinnamon apples right into the porridge or serve the cubed apple as a topping on a bowlful of creamy porridge.

Tips and Variations
Here are some tips to make humble oats into a perfect breakfast for a chilly morning:
- Add a pinch of salt to the oats while cooking - this small step enhances the flavours and balances the sweetness in this Apple and Cinnamon Porridge recipe.
- Sprinkle in some chia seeds during cooking for added creaminess and a nutritional boost - a great way to make your breakfast more filling.
- Use a mix of sweet and tart apples, like Braeburn or Granny Smith, for the perfect balance of flavours.
- Only have one pan? Cook the apples for 5 minutes, then add the milk and oats, and finish cooking it all together!
Serving Suggestions
Serve your Apple and Cinnamon Porridge with a handful of toasted pumpkin seeds, pecans or walnuts for a satisfying crunch or an extra sprinkle of cinnamon.
A dollop of peanut butter adds richness, while a drizzle of maple syrup or honey gives it that touch of sweetness. Experiment with toppings to find your favourite way to enjoy this cosy breakfast!

Storage and Leftovers
Store Apple and Cinnamon Porridge in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can store the apples and porridge separately to keep the textures just right. When reheating leftover porridge, add a splash of water or a little bit of extra milk to loosen it up.
Warm on the hob or in the microwave for a couple of minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through.
