Overnight Oats: Blurring Lines Between Breakfast and Dessert
I once made creamy tiramisu for a dinner party and ended up eating the leftovers for breakfast - no regrets, just inspiration.
That blissful moment sparked this easy recipe for Tiramisu Overnight Oats, which lets me enjoy the flavour of the classic Italian dessert in a slightly more justifiable, spoon-at-6am form. It's everything you love about healthy tiramisu: rich coffee, cocoa, and a creamy top layer - just with oats sneaked in for balance.
Breakfast? Dessert? Let's not label it. But if you're looking for a truly indulgent dessert with Tiramisu flavours, try our Espresso Panna Cotta (Dessert for Coffee Lovers)!
Ingredient Notes
Here are all the basic ingredients you'll need for these tiramisu oats:
- rolled oats: a.k.a. porridge oats or old-fashioned oats. If you're using quick oats (instant oats), they will be ready after 4 hours in the fridge. If you want to use steel-cut oats, make sure to chill them for at least 10-12 hours.
- unsweetened cocoa powder: or cacao powder.
- chia seeds: if you skip them, you will need less milk.
- espresso shot: cooled to room temperature.
- milk: you can make it with dairy milk or plant milk. We tested it with unsweetened almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk and cashew milk, and loved them all!
- pure maple syrup: or honey or regular sugar.
- a drop of vanilla bean paste: or vanilla extract, optional.
- Greek yogurt: or dairy-free yogurt like coconut yogurt or soy yogurt. If you don't want to use plain yogurt, skip the maple syrup and vanilla bean paste and use vanilla yogurt instead.

What's Important?
To make the best Tiramisu Overnight Oats that deliver on both flavour and texture, here are some key tips to keep in mind:
- Not exact measurements. Whilst these ratios work very well for the rolled oats I use, you may need to experiment a little to arrive at the best texture base don the ingredients you're using and the consistency of the overnight oats you like.
- Mix your oat mixture thoroughly. Make sure the oats, cocoa powder, and chia seeds are well incorporated so every bite is full of flavour.
- No cofee maker - no problem. Use instant coffee powder (espresso powder) to make 30 ml of strong coffee per portion.
- Let it sit overnight. This isn't optional! The oats need time to soften and absorb the flavours. You'll get the best result the next day.
- Go for full-fat, thick and creamy yogurt. A generous layer of yogurt, especially Greek-style yogurt, adds that creamy, mascarpone-like feel on the top of the oats.
- Sweeten to taste. Maple syrup or honey both work beautifully. Add a little more if you prefer your breakfast to lean dessert.
- Dust with cocoa just before serving. It's the best way to recreate that authentic tiramisu finish with minimal effort.
- Scale it up for meal prep - This recipe serves one, but you can easily double or triple the batch for busy mornings all week.

Storage
Store your Tiramisu Overnight Oats in an airtight container ( or individual mason jar) in the fridge for up to 3 days. For the best texture and presentation, add the yogurt topping and final dusting of cocoa powder after re-mixing, just before serving.
